ITINERARY

DAY ONE

PUERTO MALDONADO

Upon arrival at the Puerto Maldonado airport you will be picked up by your guide. Our guides are biologists, tourism professionals, or community members. Unless noted otherwise, our guides speak English. We assign guides at a 10:1 ratio. This means groups smaller than 10 people will be merged with other groups under one guide. If you would like to have a private guide or a guide in a language other than English please let us know.

Transfer from the Puerto Maldonado Airport to our Headquarters. Upon arrival from Lima or Cusco, we will welcome you at the airport and drive you in approximately ten minutes to our Puerto Maldonado headquarters. While enjoying your first taste of the forest in our gardens we will ask you to pack only the necessary gear for your next few days, and leave the rest at our safe deposit. This helps us keep the boats and cargo light.

From Puerto Maldonado we take you on a 20 kilometer drive to the Tambopata River Port, entering the Native Community of Infierno. The port is a communal business.

Tambopata River Port to Refugio Amazonas: The two and a half hour boat ride from the Tambopata Port to Refugio Amazonas will take us past the Community of Infierno and the Tambopata National Reserve´s checkpoint and into the buffer zone of this 1.3 million hectare conservation unit.

Orientation: Upon arrival, the lodge manager will welcome you and brief you with important navigation and security tips.

Caiman searches: We will be out at the river’s edge at night, scanning the shores with headlamps and flashlights to catch the red gleams of reflection from caiman eyes.

You will stay overnight at the Refugio Amazonas.

DAY TWO

CANOPY TOWER

Canopy tower: A twenty minute walk from Posada Amazonas leads to the 30 meter scaffolding canopy tower. A banister staircase running through the middle provides safe access to the platforms above. From the top you obtain spectacular views of the vast expanses of standing forest cut by the Tambopata River winding through the middle. Now and then toucans, parrots or macaws can be seen flying against the horizon, or mixed species canopy flocks land in the treetop next to you.

Brazil nut trail and camp: At a few minutes hike from the lodge you will find a beautiful old patch of Brazil Nut forest that has been harvested for decades (if not centuries) where the precarious remains of a camp used two months a year by Brazil Nut gatherers can still be experienced. We will be demonstrating the whole process of the rain forest’s only sustainably harvested product, from collection to transportation to drying.

Refugio Amazonas to Tambopata Research Centre: Four and half hours by boat from Refugio Amazonas, in the pristine heart of the reserve, lays the Tambopata Research Center. After an hour and a half, as we cross the confluence with the Malinowski River, we will leave the final traces of human habitation behind. Within the 700,000 hectare uninhabited nucleus of the reserve, sightings of capybara, caiman, geese, macaws and other large species will become more frequent.

Orientation: Upon arrival the lodge manager will welcome you and brief you with important navigation and security tips.

Overlook Trail: A three to five kilometer hike will lead us to overlook points with magnificent views of the Tambopata River winding its way into the lowlands. The forest on this trail, regenerating on old bamboo forest, is good for Howler Monkeys and Dusky Titi Monkeys.

Macaw Project Lectures: After dinner scientists will provide an in depth look at the biology of macaws, their feeding habits, the theories for clay lick use, their breeding and feeding ecology, population fluctuations and the threats to their conservation.

You will stay overnight at the Tambopata Research Center.

DAY THREE

MACAW CLAY LICK

Macaw Clay Lick: On most clear mornings of the year, dozens of large macaws and hundreds of parrots congregate on this large river bank in a raucous and colorful spectacle which inspired a National Geographic cover story. Discretely located at fifty meters from the cliff, we will observe Green-winged, scarlet and Blue-and-gold Macaws and several species of smaller parrots descend to ingest clay. Outings are at dawn when the lick is most active.

Floodplain Trail: This five kilometer trail covers the prototypical rain forest with immense trees crisscrossed by creeks and ponds. Amongst the figs, Ceibas and shihuahuacos we will look for Squirrels, Brown Capuchins, and Spider Monkeys as well as peccaries. TRC is located within this habitat.

Pond Platform: Ten minutes upriver from the lodge is a tiny pond with a platform in the middle. It is a great place to spot waterfowl such as Muscovy duck, sun bittern and hoatzin along with the woodpeckers, oropendolas, flycatchers and parakeets that call this pond their home.

Night walk: You will have the option of going out hiking at night, when most of the mammals are active but unfortunately rarely seen. Much easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds are as bizarre as their natural histories.

You will stay overnight at the Tambopata Research Center

DAY FOUR

TIME AT LEISURE

Time at leisure: Time off to relax and enjoy the lodge’s surroundings, wander off on your own, try out a new trail, or repeat your favorite activity.

Terra Firme Trail: An entirely different habitat characterized by smaller, thinner trees atop hills and slopes is covered by this five kilometer trail. Saddleback tamarinds are frequently found here. As we walk near the limits of the swamp we will also keep our eyes open for rare tapir tracks.

Palm Swamp: A thirty minute hike from TRC brings us to the palm swamp. Dead Aguaje palms serve as nests to Red-bellied and Blue-and-gold macaws. An elevated boardwalk and scaffolding tower allow for eye level observation of the macaws as they fly in and out their nests.

You will stay overnight at the Tambopata Research Center

DAY FIVE

TAMBOPATA

Tambopata Research Center to Refugio Amazonas: A three and a half hour boat ride brings us back to Refugio Amazonas.

Condenado Oxbow Lake – CONDEL: A forty minute hike takes you to the Condenado Lake. You paddle in canoes around the lake looking for lakeside wildlife such as hoatzins and caimans and hopefully see the otters which are infrequently seen here. You will also be rewarded with overhead sightings of macaws.

You will stay overnight at the Refugio Amazonas.

DAY SIX

TAMBOPATA RIVER PORT

We will transfer you to the Tambopata River Port from where you will take a boat to our Maldonado Headquarters. From here you will be transferred to the airport. Depending on airline schedules, the transfers may require very early departures from the Posada.

Transportation by boat: All our boats are 20 foot long, roofed canoes with 55 hp outboard motors. Daily arrivals and departures from every port are scheduled to meet every airline´s arrival and departure with a maximum of a two hours waiting time.

Macaw Clay Lick: On most clear mornings of the year, dozens of large macaws and hundreds of parrots congregate on this large river bank in a raucous and colorful spectacle which inspired a National Geographic cover story. Discretely located at fifty meters from the cliff, we will observe Green-winged, scarlet and Blue-and-gold Macaws and several species of smaller parrots that descend to ingest clay.

It is a great place to spot waterfowl such as Muscovy duck, sun bittern and hoatzins along with the woodpeckers, oropendolas, flycatchers and parakeets that call this pond their home.

Night walk: You will have the option of going out hiking at night, when most of the mammals are active but unfortunately rarely seen. Much easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds are as bizarre as their natural histories.

You will stay overnight at the Tambopata Research Center.

DAY FOUR

Tambopata Research Center to Refugio Amazonas: A three and a half hour boat ride brings us back to Refugio Amazonas. Condenado Oxbow Lake – CONDEL: A forty minute hike takes you Condenado Lake. You paddle canoes around the lake looking for lakeside wildlife such as hoatzins and caimans and hopefully see the otters which are infrequently seen here. You will also be rewarded with overhead sightings of macaws.

Tambopata National Reserve Lecture: Nightly lectures prepared by the staff of Refugio Amazonas cover conservation threats, opportunities and projects in the Tambopata National Reserve.

You will stay overnight at the Refugio Amazonas

ITINERARY

Caiman searches. We will be out at the river’s edge at night, scanning the shores with headlamps and flashlights to catch the red gleams of reflection from caiman eyes.

You will stay overnight at the Refugio Amazonas.

DAY TWO

SACHAVAYOC OXBOW LAKE

Sachavacayoc Oxbow Lake: A two hour hike takes you to Sachavacayoc Lake. You will paddle around the lake in a catamaran, searching for the resident family of five giant river otters (seen by about 30% of lake visitors) and other lakeside wildlife such as caimans, hoatzins and horned screamers. We hike out at dawn – when otters are active. Don’t forget about the two hour return hike! For those who do not want to take such a long hike, Condenado Lake, at only thirty minutes from the lodge, is an option.

Farm Visit and Ethno botanical Garden: Five minutes downriver from the lodge lays a farm owned and managed by the charismatic Don Manuel from the neighboring community of Condenado. He grows a variety of popular and unknown Amazon crops. Just about every plant and tree you see here has a purpose. He has also identified and cultivated many of the medicinal plants used in the region in a little backyard garden.

Night walk: You will have the option of going out hiking at night, when most of the mammals are active but unfortunately rarely seen. Much easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds are as bizarre as their natural histories.

You will stay overnight at the Refugio Amazonas

DAY THREE

PARAKEET CLAY LICK

Parakeet clay lick: A fifteen minute boat ride and sixty minute walk from Refugio Amazonas you find a parakeet clay lick. From a blind spot you will see parakeets descend on most clear days to ingest the clay on a bank. Species such as Dusky headed and Cobalt winged Parakeet descend at this clay lick. We visit the lick at dawn, in the midmorning or early afternoon, when parrots are most active.

Mammal clay lick: Twenty minutes walking from Refugio Amazonas is a peccary clay lick. These wild rain forest pigs show up in herds of five to twenty individuals to eat clay in the late morning. Chances of spotting them are approximately 15%, but well worth the short hike. Other wildlife also shows up including deer, guan sand parakeets.

Tambopata National Reserve Lecture: Nightly lectures prepared by the staff of Refugio Amazonas cover conservation threats, opportunities and projects in the Tambopata National Reserve.

You will stay overnight at the Refugio Amazonas.

ITINERARY

Caiman searches. We will be out at the river’s edge at night, scanning the shores with headlamps and flashlights to catch the red gleams of reflection from caiman eyes.

You will stay overnight at the Refugio Amazonas

DAY TWO

CONAPY TOWER

Canopy tower: A twenty minute walk from Posada Amazonas leads to the 30 meter scaffolding canopy tower. A banister staircase running through the middle provides safe access to the platforms above. From the top you obtain spectacular views of the vast expanses of standing forest cut by the Tambopata River winding through the middle. Now and then toucans, parrots or macaws can be seen flying against the horizon, or mixed species canopy flocks land in the treetop next to you.

Night walk: You will have the option of going out hiking at night, when most of the mammals are active but unfortunately rarely seen. Much easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds are as bizarre as their natural histories.

You will stay overnight at the Refugio Amazonas

DAY THREE

TAMBOPATA RIVER PORT

We will transfer you to the Tambopata River Port from where you will take a boat to our Maldonado Headquarters. From here you will be transferred to the airport. Depending on airline schedules, the transfers may require very early departures from the Posada.

Transportation by boat: All our boats are 20 foot long, roofed canoes with 55 hp outboard motors. Daily arrivals and departures from every port are scheduled to meet every airline´s arrival and departure with a maximum of a two hours waiting time.

For those who have some time to spend in Lima, also called the city of the Kings, we have a small variety of interesting sightseeing tours. We have many years of experience and knowledge of tourism in Peru with excellent English speaking guides. We recommend early departure times for our tours to ensure that you have enough time to enjoy each place we visit. Colonial Lima is a monument in architecture; beautiful styles are examples of a historical past and modern Lima is an example of a big metropolitan city: parks, plazas, and high buildings are part of a fast developing city. Our service is personal and professional.

Our tour starts by collecting you from your hotel. The Museo Arqueológico Rafael Larco Herrera is home to one of the world’s largest private collection of pre-Columbian art. The museum was founded in 1926 and showcases remarkable chronological galleries providing an overview of 3000 years of development in pre-Columbian history in Peru.
The building itself is a unique vice-royal mansion of the 18th century built over a 7th century pre-Columbian pyramid and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. The museum features one of the finest gold and silver collections from Ancient Peru, and includes the famous erotic archaeological collection, one of the most visited Peruvian tourist attractions. Larco is also one of the few museums in the world where visitors can also choose to enter the storage area with its 45,000 classified archaeological objects. Our services end by leaving you at your hotel.

Our guided trek offers you a personal meeting with the famous Apu Salkantay. Apu means mountain spirit in Quechua and the Andean people believe all snow capped mountains have spirits. Apu Salkantay is a very important Apu in the Andean spiritual believes. This tour is especially designed for hikers who love nature and adventure. We hike on the slopes of the mountains, up to beautiful view points from which we have amazing views on Limatambo, the Willky pass, the dark green SorayPampa. The most impressive view is the one of Umantay snow capped mountain. Moreover, in this valley stands out the Salkantay glacier. Until now, this majestic snow capped mountain is our spiritual protector Incan God; native peoples still worship this mountain with special prayers and offerings. Our adventure includes 2 nights of camping in the magical Andean nature, flanked by Rocky Mountains and green forests, passing through different ecological levels. Our last night, we stay at a hotel for a well deserved good night of sleep.
