It is famous for its artificial floating islands made of reeds, and the inhabitants still practice pre-Inca and Inca traditions. The people from Puno perform different ethnical dances during big yearly returning festivities with dancers dressed traditionally. Moreover, according to the legend, Inca civilization started with the first Inca coming out of the lake. The lake and its islands are holy places for the Aymara people. Puno – The Uros Floating Islands –The Island of Taquile – Puno
Our tour starts by collecting you from your hotel. We then take a motor-boat to visit the famous Uros Floating Islands, northwest of Puno on Lake Titicaca. The Uros Islands are a group of 40 floating islands which provide a glimpse of one of the regions oldest cultures. The islands are man-made, woven from Totora reeds and the dense roots that these plants develop support the island. The islanders live in huts made from the same materials and travel from island to island in boats also made from the reeds. The local inhabitants make their living by fishing and trapping birds. They also make weavings, collages and musical instruments to sell to the visiting tourists. Lunch at one of the Islands.
We then travel on to the island of Taquile. The island is located 35km west of Puno and surrounded by the vast ocean-like waters of Lake Titicaca. Taquile is inhabited by proud, Quechua-speaking natives who still wear traditional dress and have successfully maintained the lifestyle of their ancestors. There is a very strong sense of community on the island.
We have dinner and spend a night at a local family’s house.
DAY THREE
FULL DAY TOUR
The Island of Taquile – Puno – Sillustani Burial towers
We enjoy the fantastic sunrise on the island. After a delicious breakfast we return to Puno. We will have lunch at a restaurant.
In the afternoon we will go on a guided tour of Sillustani. Sillustani is an ancient burial ground near Lake Titicaca at approximately 30km from the city of Puno by bus. It is situated 13,500 ft above sea level and is one of the many sites in the Puno area that hold mysterious burial towers, called chullpas. Sillustani is perhaps the most impressive and is built on the beautiful peninsula of Lake Umayo. Sillustani comprises of 28 stone burial towers representing a city of dead dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. The tombs are built above the ground and demonstrate a lot of symbolism. The inside of the tombs are shaped like a woman’s uterus. The ancestors who built them believed in Mother Earth creating and regulating life. When a person died, they were mummified in the fetal position, leaving the world as they had entered. The doors of the tombs face east, because it is believed that that is where the sun is born from Mother Earth each day. On the way back to Puno city, we visit the house of a traditional Family.
We have dinner at a restaurant and overnight at hotel.
