ITINERARY
Our guided Sacred South tour starts by collecting you from your hotel. We then have a 40 minutes private transfer to Pikillacta (flea town) archaeological site at 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) east of Cusco. Its altitude is 3,400 m (11,000 ft). The town pre-dates the Incas. The ruins cover an area of 50 hectares (123 acres), and are surrounded by a 10 meters (33 ft) high wall that is still partly intact. It was built by the wary culture, which arose near Ayacucho and probably constructed around 600-950 after Christ. It has rough stone walls, two and three storey buildings, where food, clothing and weapons were stored. There is also an impressive Incan gate-way to the Cusco valley which was used to control the access to the city.
Continuing, we will pass through Rumicolca (Stone Storehouse) at 3 kilometers (1.5 miles) further east of Pikillacta. It was a stone quarry that in Incan times served for extraction of the grey andesine stone which was used in the construction of the Incan Cusco city. Piñipampta is the major center of production for the red roofing tiles of Cusco.
We then visit the village of Andahuaylillas which is situated at approximately 40 kilometers. (25 miles) east of Cusco, and has an altitude of 3100 meters (10170 ft). It is a small, attractive village. The spacious main plaza is adorned with Pisonay (coral trees), palm trees and the colonial houses surrounding it. The colonial church of San Pedro is the major attraction in the entire village. It is considered to be The Sistine Chapel of the Americas, because of the quality of the artworks and its stunning multicolor and gold leaf ceiling, incredible murals and some fine colonial paintings. There is no church in the city of Cusco to compare with it.
After our guided visit we will return to Cusco, where our services will end with leaving you at your hotel.
