NEARBY RUINS HALF DAY TOUR
We recommend this superb practice before any Inca trail hikes to acclimatize to walking in high altitude and to control your breathing and hiking speed.
From 8:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.
Tambo Machay, Pucapucara, Q’enqo, Saqsaywaman, San Cristóbal and Main Square
Our guided archeological walk starts by collecting you from your hotel. We take a 15 minutes ride to the Tambo Machay archaeological complex. We start hiking from Tambo Machay located at approximately 9 kilometers (6 miles) towards the northeast of Cusco city. Its altitude is 3,750 meters (12,200 ft). Tambomachay is the sacred bathing place for the Inca rulers; “The Incas Bath”, and was probably a centre of water worship. It is known that the Incas referred to water as one of the principal elements of life.
Half a kilometer from Tambomachay we will find Pucapucara at approximately 8.5 kilometers (5.3 miles) from Cusco and with an altitude of 3750 meters above sea level (12300 ft). It was originally thought to be a military checkpoint. It was also a collective lodge offering food and shelter for travelers, as well as for the retinue escorting the Inca to his retreat in Tambomachay. Ahead we can observe the Huayllarqocha community. It has a spectacular view point of the highest mountain called Ausangate.
We then start descending about 2 kilometers in order to reach Q’enqo towards the southeast of Pucapucara. It was an Inca shrine (huaca) with a circular amphitheater and a stone block that is said to be representing a puma. This ceremonial center was dedicated to the worshipping of mother earth (Pacha Mama).
One kilometer northwest we find Sacsayhuaman. This site is situated towards the northeast of Cusco with an altitude of 3600 meters above sea level (11800 ft). It is a bold demonstration of ancient construction skills. Made of massive stones weighing up to 17,000 kg (125 tons), this ruin was called “The Fortress” by the Spanish. It was more than simply a military structure. Some historians say the zigzagging shape of the walls represented the god of lightning, an important Inca deity.
As we travel further down we reach the church of San Cristobal and next to it the imposing remains of the palace of Manco Capac, the first Inca. Finally, four blocks ahead from San Cristobal is the main square of Cusco, the Plaza de Armas.
Lunch and dinner at a restaurant and overnight at the hotel
DAY THREE
WALKING TOUR
From 8:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.
The Plaza de Armas, Sacsayhuaman, San Cristóbal, Q’enqo, the Moon Temple and the San Blas
Our enigmatical guided walk starts by collecting you from your Hotel. We start with the center of the city of Cusco; Plaza de Armas. Its altitude is 3,400 meters (11,000 ft). We then start walking up towards the monumental temple of Sacsayhuaman; it is approximately half an hour’s walk and is situated at 3 kilometers (2 miles) from the centre. It is situated 200 meters (656 ft) northeast above Cusco. Half way uphill we will find the church of San Cristobal and next to it the imposing remains of the Palace of Manco Capac, the first Inca.
Continuing east from Sacsayhuaman lays Q’enqo. Its altitude is 3,600 m (11,600 ft) and it used to be the mother earth temple. There are carvingseverywhere and under the sedimentary stone hill the most amazing Inca altar can be found.
Towards the northeast there is the Moon Temple. It is 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) from the ancient Incan road towards the antisuyo (into the Amazon direction). We then start descending to The San Blas neighborhood, an artisan neighborhood with its own chapel and Main Square.
Lunch and dinner at a restaurant. Overnight at hotel.
DAY FOUR
SACRED VALLEY TOUR
From 8:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.
The Pisac Market, Ollantaytambo ruins and the town
Our guided Sacred Valley tour starts by collecting you from your hotel. We then transfer you to Pisac in approximately 40 minutes in order to visit the Pisac Market. This market is a highly recommended artisan market, especially on market days and Sundays. The peasants from the surrounding communities descend from the mountains in order to perform their commercial transactions. The colorful clothing of peasants is very showy. Their native hats make them very easy to distinguish. At 11:00 A.M. there is a catholic mass in the church for the local populace in Incan language. After the market visit, we will enjoy Lunch at a restaurant.
We then have a demonstration of Inca beer preparation in an Andean bar (Ajahuasy).
Afterwards, we travel to Ollantaytambo Town which is situated at 68 kilometers (47.2 miles) northwest of Cusco; its altitude is 2,700 meters (8,856 ft). This town used to be the Royal estate of the Inca Pachacuteq, which stands at a strategic spot, enclosed in hills that hide some of the most impressive ruins from Inca and Pre-Inca times. The town is one of the best surviving Inca settlements still inhabited, in blocks called Canchas, one Cancha housed several families. Moreover, we will have a fantastic ceramic demonstration in pre-Inca and Inca style and then transfer to the hotel in the Sacred Valley.
